Mechanical testing is performed at The Corral Laboratory using an Instron 5965 at room or elevated temperature measurements using an attached split furnace (Allied Test Systems, Series 3320). The Instron has a 450 lb load cell making it able to break most materials using the A or B bar dimensions. We have two adjustable bending fixtures for room tempearture measurements that can test in three and four point configurations from spans of 8 mm to 10 cm. High temperature measurements utilize a silicon carbide fixture (produced in our SPS 10-3) up to 1700°C in air or inert environments. All mechanical testing setups are designed in compliance with ASTM standards: room temperature flexural testing (ASTM C1161), high temperature flexural testing (ASTM C1211) and fracture toughness (ASTM C1421).
